Labour MEP for the West Midlands, Siôn Simon, is calling on the West Midlands Mayor to explain his failure to secure Channel 4 relocation to the West Midlands.
Tory Mayor Andy Street campaigned for election on a promise to bring Channel 4 to the West Midlands.
He confirmed to an audience at the Signature Awards that he was “prepared in front of these witnesses to predict another success of teamwork this year and it will be that we do get the nod for Channel 4.”
A deal bringing Channel 4 to the West Midlands would have boosted the regional economy by £5billion.
Mr Simon said:
“Theresa May’s Tory Mayor pledged to be knocking on the door of Downing Street to get Channel 4 to the West Midlands – but it was all talk.
“He endlessly touted his connections to central government during his campaign.
“Now it’s clear he wasn’t representing our interests in those cosy chats, but taking his orders.
“His Tory government has ignored the West Midlands once again.
“Stoke has even been overlooked as a creative hub. Outrageous.
“This is a spectacular failure by the Tory Mayor. Will he now apologise to the incredible creative industries in our region that he misled?”
