Press Secretary to Siôn Simon MEP

Competitive Salary (Part-time 20 hrs a week) 

Siôn Simon, Labour MEP for the West Midlands, is seeking to recruit a part time Press Secretary to work with his constituency office in West Bromwich. The successful candidate will be able to be home-based, work in the office or combine the two. Applications from freelance writers/journalists are welcome and encouraged. 

The post holder will be responsible for the news management and promotion of Siôn’s work in the West Midlands Region.

Experienced in developing and delivering a proactive regional communications strategy, the post holder will take responsibility for the day-to-day presentation of Siôn’s activities online and in regional media.

The successful candidate will have hands-on media experience and an understanding of regional and European politics. Direct experience in local or national journalism would be highly advantageous.

The post holder will carry out the following responsibilities:

- To lead on developing and delivering a regional communications strategy promoting Siôn’s work in the West Midlands.

-  To work in conjunction with colleagues in Siôn’s constituency office and parliamentary office to ensure the effective delivery of a communications strategy.

- To establish a broad network of contacts within the press and online media and to be proactive in maximizing the value of this network.

- To liaise directly with Siôn to identify opportunities to promote his work in the West Midlands.

- To establish an effective media monitoring system and brief Siôn on news and events in the West Midlands that impact his work.

- To react and respond flexibly to breaking news events and ongoing media coverage as required.

- To work some weekend and evening hours as required.

Person Specification

Essential

Extensive experience within a media environment.

Experience of developing and delivering a communications strategy in either a political office, a media setting, or commercial organization.

Experience of relationship-building with high-level stakeholders.

Experience of managing media coverage in a fast-paced and changing environment, covering complex and sensitive issues.

Experience of working under pressure and to tight deadlines. 

Experience of proactive delivery of press features, informed by detailed research and analysis.

An understanding of regional, national and European politics, and the ability to provide insight on regional issues.

Experience and high skill levels in digital comms, including social media channels.

Skills and Ability

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team.

Ability to share and celebrate best practice with colleagues.

Commitment to the ongoing aims and priorities of Siôn’s office.
